UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Hamburg
Kontorhaus and Speicherstadt quarters as World Cultural Heritage sites
UNESCO World Heritage Elbe – this was the aim of the Living Elbe project when it was
initiated by Deutsche Umwelthilfe and Gruner + Jahr in 1997. Many of the outstanding
cultural and natural sites along the Elbe have been granted UNESCO status in the
years since, including the Elbwiesen in Dresden, which were awarded the accolade
last year. You will find more information on the topic in the interview with
Prof. von Droste zu Hülshoff "The Elbe must become a World Heritage site".
In Hamburg, the Chilehaus has been on the UNESCO heritage waiting list for inscription
since 1998. Hamburg, the largest harbor city on the River Elbe, also has a plethora of
architecturally unique buildings and quarters that are shortly to be nominated in the
UNESCO Modern Heritage category. The nomination of the Chilehaus is just the starting point -
the Kontorhaus and Speicherstadt quarters could also enrich Elbe´s World Heritage landscape.
Gruner + Jahr supports an extended UNESCO nomination for Hamburg. On June 6, 2005,
the publishing house took the initiative and gathered all the parties involved around
one table. G+J management board member Angelika Jahr invited the future promoters of
this image-building enterprise for Hamburg to a meeting at the G+J publishing house.
And the feedback was very positive.
"We should try to bring all stakeholders together and prepare the nomination
of Hamburg´s modern architectural heritage for World Heritage status by the year 2007",
suggested Prof. von Droste zu Hülshoff, UNESCO advisor for the "Living Elbe" project and
founder of the World Heritage Center in Paris. According to him, Hamburg has a fair
chance with such a substantially enhanced nomination, as it is the only state in Germany
which has no UNESCO World Heritage sites as yet. There are also promising possibilities
for Hamburg within the relatively new category of Modern Heritage, even bearing
international competition in mind.
A digital press folder has been prepared on the "Elbe Swimming Day/Big Jump 2005";
this also includes documents in English.
