Henri-Nannen School
Gruner + Jahr and DIE ZEIT are the sponsors of the Henri-Nannen School, which was founded in 1978 in Hamburg.
To date it has trained 531 young people in journalism for newspapers, magazines, radio and television.
If you have a talent for writing, like to approach people and are curious, critical, unrelenting, strong and
have lots of ideas and if it is your passion to work in journalism and you are not over 27, you should
participate in our next selection process.
It starts at May 4th, 2006 with a notice in DIE ZEIT. Only after the ad has
appeared can we send you the required documents. Please do not write us before then! You will then receive
five topics to choose from for one report and one commentary. Then you send us your work. Various jurors,
experienced journalists, will read and evaluate the texts. The fifty best applicants will be invited
to a final exam in Hamburg. Of these, 20 will be accepted to the school.
The training lasts one and a half years. It consists of one third seminars and two thirds internships in four
different editorial departments. You will be trained in the trade basics of the job: writing, editing, photo captions,
titles and summaries, copywriting for radio and television, live interviews and producing broadcasts.
All journalistic forms will be practiced: news, feature, reports, analysis, interview and commentary.
Clear, understandable German as well as a respectable and lively style is taught along with the necessary
technical skills for all media.
