Promoting young talent is particularly important to G+J. The areas of reading, literature and photography are thus a focal point of the media company’s support programmes.
Support for child and youth culture and the promotion of reading are one of the priorities of the media company's social commitment. G+J is also the main sponsor of the "Buchstart" (book start) project. Since 2007, this has been a beacon project of the City of Hamburg in the area of early language development. Together with the cultural authorities and other partners, Gruner + Jahr, as main sponsor, has created an ongoing and broadly based measure to encourage early speech development and reading. Furthermore Gruner + Jahr is an active member of "Stiftung Lesen".
Every year since 2002, numerous universities in Germany have been inviting children to lectures in which scientists from a wide variety of disciplines provide a vivid and child-oriented insight into the fascination of science. Schoolchildren receive the opportunity to get to know university life and to immerse themselves in scientific topics for the first time. Awakening children’s curiosity about the exciting events of this world at an early age and sharpening their awareness that learning can be fun - this is also one of the elementary aims of the GEO children's titles of Gruner + Jahr. GEOlino, the knowledge magazine for children, has been supporting the Children's Universities as a cooperation partner from the very beginning.
The Hamburg School Magazine Competition not only aims to promote talent, but also the age-appropriate interests and responsible participation of pupils in school life and to honour the work and achievements of school magazine editors. The focus here is on the school magazine as the pupils’ voice. The competition is organised by the Hamburg federal ministry responsible for schools and vocational training in cooperation with Gruner + Jahr and the Junge Presse Hamburg e.V. association.Gruner + Jahr has been involved in promoting the school magazine competitions at federal state level since 2007 and in this role awards the "Special Prize for young journalists " worth 250 euros.
