In front of a capacity crowd of 1.000 top magazine professionals during the annual Mercur Magazine Awards Gala Quest received the Mercur award for ;lsquo;Magazine Of The Year'. The entire editorial team of 30 climbed the stage when the winner was announced. ;lsquo;And then there were just eight of us in the beginning', says Karlijn van Overbeek, Editor-in-Chief. ;lsquo;Circulation has steadily increased since the launch in 2004. Over 200.000 copies of Quest are being sold every month, satisfying a total readership of almost 1,1 million. This Mercur award is also a prize for all those readers. Martin Trautmann (41) has been appointed Executive Vice President of Prisma Presse. In his new role, he will supervise the Business and Science (;Eacute;conomie / Dé;couverte) division of G+J's French publishing arm. From January, this puts him in charge of the GEO, CAPITAL, ;Ccedil;A M'INT;Eacute;RESSE, NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC and MANAGEMENT magazines and websites.

Christian Merl, 38, has been appointed press spokesman for Gruner + Jahr AG with effect from 1 January 2010. Gruner + Jahr is rearranging its international organization and is once again combining all its foreign operations, including G+J France, into the G+J International division led by G+J Executive Board member Dr. Torsten-Jörn Klein. As part of the reorganization, Fabrice Boé; will resign from the G+J Executive Board and from his duties as CEO of G+J France, with effect from October 1, 2009. He will continue to serve the G+J Executive Board as a consultant on international strategic issues. Boé; had been appointed to the Executive Board of Gruner + Jahr in January 2006, and in this capacity represented the French subsidiary on the top management body of Europe's biggest magazine publisher.

Advertising Slump Impacts Gruner + Jahr's Half-Year Results

Gruner + Jahr was unable to escape the effects of an exceedingly difficult market environment in the first half of 2009 and, as forecast earlier, reported a clear year-on-year drop in revenues and Operating EBIT. The downturn-induced decline in brand-name advertising in the core markets has led to a considerable drop in ad sales revenues. Gruner + Jahr is countering the unrelenting ad sales crisis and the resultant accelerated structural change with a comprehensive cost-reduction and restructuring program in all markets.

G+J International merges its international brands and licenses business / Andr;eacute; Möllersmann appointed to head new "International Brands and Licenses Unit"

André; Möllersmann, 36, has been appointed to head the "International Brands and Licenses Unit" at G+J International with effect from July 1, 2009. The purpose of the newly created department is to internationalize G+J's strong brands such as GALA, GEO, ELTERN/Parenting Network and the international popular-science titles PM, QUEST, FOCUS and MUY INTERESANTE, both in print and online. The department will also serve to support synergies between the international brands.

On July 1, 2009 G+J IMS will be opening its sixth foreign office, adding the Milan site to its existing operations in London, Paris, Gent, Zurich and Vienna. The strong local presence of key deciders in the advertising activities of the fashion, design and furniture industries in Italy makes Milan G+J IMS;rsquo;s highest-turnover sales office. The new office ends the company;rsquo;s longstanding commission-based representation by Blei Spa on the Italian market, and substantiates the ongoing expansion of G+J;rsquo;s international media marketing activities. The move further enhances G+J IMS;rsquo;s leading marketing expertise among German publishers abroad and strengthens its growing third-party business. Around 50 editors-in-chief and leading journalists from 20 countries plan to ratify the first "European Charter for Press Freedom" on 25 May in Hamburg. The charter formulates principles for the freedom of the press/media from government interference – in particular for their right to safety from surveillance, electronic eavesdropping and searches of editorial departments and computers, and unimpeded access for journalists and citizens to all domestic and foreign sources of information.

Claus-Peter Schrack, 43, will take the helm of Gruner + Jahr's Corporate Communications department in Hamburg with effect from June 1, 2009. In this role, he will supervise all of the company's external and internal communications both in Germany and on international level, reporting directly to Dr. Bernd Buchholz, Chairman & CEO of Gruner + Jahr. Schrack comes to Hamburg from the Munich-based company Loyalty Partner, whose businesses include Germany's largest bonus program, Payback. He has spent the past three years handling all corporate communications as well as public affairs and corporate marketing for Loyalty Partner, Payback and all subsidiaries.
