G+J International merges its international brands and licenses business / Andr;eacute; Möllersmann appointed to head new "International Brands and Licenses Unit"

André; Möllersmann, 36, has been appointed to head the "International Brands and Licenses Unit" at G+J International with effect from July 1, 2009. The purpose of the newly created department is to internationalize G+J's strong brands such as GALA, GEO, ELTERN/Parenting Network and the international popular-science titles PM, QUEST, FOCUS and MUY INTERESANTE, both in print and online. The department will also serve to support synergies between the international brands.

G+J International Media Sales (IMS) Opens New Sales Office in Milan

On July 1, 2009 G+J IMS will be opening its sixth foreign office, adding the Milan site to its existing operations in London, Paris, Gent, Zurich and Vienna. The strong local presence of key deciders in the advertising activities of the fashion, design and furniture industries in Italy makes Milan G+J IMS;rsquo;s highest-turnover sales office. The new office ends the company;rsquo;s longstanding commission-based representation by Blei Spa on the Italian market, and substantiates the ongoing expansion of G+J;rsquo;s international media marketing activities. The move further enhances G+J IMS;rsquo;s leading marketing expertise among German publishers abroad and strengthens its growing third-party business. The six international offices are assisted in their efforts by 17 sales representatives who market the G+J IMS portfolio around the world.

Around 50 editors-in-chief and leading journalists from 20 countries plan to ratify the first "European Charter for Press Freedom" on 25 May in Hamburg. The charter formulates principles for the freedom of the press/media from government interference – in particular for their right to safety from surveillance, electronic eavesdropping and searches of editorial departments and computers, and unimpeded access for journalists and citizens to all domestic and foreign sources of information.

The 14 award winners were honored at a celebratory event at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg in front of around 1,200 prominent guests from the world of media, culture, politics and economics.

Claus-Peter Schrack Appointed to Head Corporate Communications at Gruner + Jahr

Claus-Peter Schrack, 43, will take the helm of Gruner + Jahr's Corporate Communications department in Hamburg with effect from June 1, 2009. In this role, he will supervise all of the company's external and internal communications both in Germany and on international level, reporting directly to Dr. Bernd Buchholz, Chairman & CEO of Gruner + Jahr. Schrack comes to Hamburg from the Munich-based company Loyalty Partner, whose businesses include Germany's largest bonus program, Payback. He has spent the past three years handling all corporate communications as well as public affairs and corporate marketing for Loyalty Partner, Payback and all subsidiaries.

GEO Continues Its International Expansion Course Online

The reportage magazine GEO continues its international expansion course online. After successfully launching in Spain at
www.mundo-geo.es in January, it is now launching GEO websites on the same basis in Finland, Russia, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania and Croatia. This means that eight of the 12 planned sites are already online within the first three months of the year.

The publisher has acquired a majority share in the magazine JAN from the Telegraaf Tijdschriften Groep, with retroactive effect from January 1st 2009. The acquisition also includes the parenting magazine JANTJE and the JAN-MAGAZINE.nl website.

First license issued in Lithuania for GALA people/lifestyle magazine

The first issue of GALA published under license in Lithuania made its newsstand debut at the end of January 2009. Lithuania's IEVA Group, publisher of the high-end fashion magazine IEVA, is the licensing partner for the Gruner + Jahr title. GALA's editor-in-chief is the former editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan Lithuania, Eva Tombak.

G + J International continues launch of multinational online projects, sets up GEO sites in 12 countries

The reportage magazine GEO is now advancing its international expansion in the online realm as well, and has launched the multinational roll-out of GEO websites based on a shared technical platform. The first international GEO site will go online in Spain at www.mundo-geo.es, by 19 January 2009 at the latest – to be followed in the coming weeks by Russia, Italy, Finland and eight other countries within the first half of 2009.

Bernd Buchholz Appointed Chief Executive Officer of Gruner + Jahr

Dr Bernd Buchholz, a member of the G+J Executive Board and President of G+J Germany, has been appointed the new CEO of Gruner + Jahr by the company's supervisory board with immediate effect. Buchholz succeeds Dr Bernd Kundrun, who today resigned as CEO with immediate effect due to differences regarding Gruner + Jahr's future strategy. The company and Kundrun are parting ways in mutual agreement. Bernd Buchholz's appointment to the Bertelsmann Executive Board will be decided on by the appropriate administrative bodies at a later point in time.

G+J launches "Parenting Network" as first transnational online project / Seven countries to be included in launch

G+J International is establishing a new international parenting network, based on the German ELTERN.de website, in a move which represents G+J's first transnational online project. By the end of 2008 local websites will go online in Croatia, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Russia and Spain. In 2009 the worldwide rollout will continue. The beta version was already launched at the end of September in Croatia (www.roditelji.hr) and by the end of October the parenting website in Italy will also go online (www.nostrofiglio.it).
