Quest wins ;lsquo;Magazine Of The Year' award

In front of a capacity crowd of 1.000 top magazine professionals during the annual Mercur Magazine Awards Gala Quest received the Mercur award for ;lsquo;Magazine Of The Year'. The entire editorial team of 30 climbed the stage when the winner was announced. ;lsquo;And then there were just eight of us in the beginning', says Karlijn van Overbeek, Editor-in-Chief. ;lsquo;Circulation has steadily increased since the launch in 2004. Over 200.000 copies of Quest are being sold every month, satisfying a total readership of almost 1,1 million. This Mercur award is also a prize for all those readers. Martin Trautmann (41) has been appointed Executive Vice President of Prisma Presse. In his new role, he will supervise the Business and Science (;Eacute;conomie / Dé;couverte) division of G+J's French publishing arm. From January, this puts him in charge of the GEO, CAPITAL, ;Ccedil;A M'INT;Eacute;RESSE, NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC and MANAGEMENT magazines and websites.

Around 50 editors-in-chief and leading journalists from 20 countries plan to ratify the first "European Charter for Press Freedom" on 25 May in Hamburg. The charter formulates principles for the freedom of the press/media from government interference – in particular for their right to safety from surveillance, electronic eavesdropping and searches of editorial departments and computers, and unimpeded access for journalists and citizens to all domestic and foreign sources of information.

Gruner + Jahr publishing house and its partners ran the G+J photo award competition for the first time in spring 2008. The photo award is a prize celebrating new professional talent and young professional photographers up to the age of 35 years. An amazing 602 entries made this competition a resounding success last year and encouraged the partners to stage it again this year. The first competition round for 2009 starts today.

Each year for 50 years now, the World Press Photo Foundation´s international panel of judges has picked the best and most memorable press photographs of the previous year. This year, the World Press Photo exhibition again shows moving and haunting images: of the aftermath of the Tsunami disaster in Southeast Asia, the hostage-taking in Beslan, and of political unrest in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. But there are also pictures that tell of major sports events like the Olympics in Athens, along with photography highlights from art, culture, nature and science.

In a continuingly difficult global marketenvironment, Europe´s biggest magazine publisher Gruner + Jahr in 2003again earned very good money and is well equipped for further growth.EBITA was improved to ;euro; 238 million (previous year: ;euro; 234 million) primarilydue to a strengthened core business and continuing strict cost discipline.Return on Sales rose to 9.6 percent (previous year: 8.3 percent). Beforepublishing investments, i.e. not including development costs and start-uplosses for new magazine titles, ROS amounted to 12.1 percent. Due to specialitems such as disposals and currency, income from external sales effects fellto ;euro; 2.48 billion (previous year: ;euro; 2.8 billion); adjusted for these specialitems, revenues remained stable.
