Gruner + Jahr has signed a licensing agreement with Ringier Axel Springer Media AG, a joint venture of Axel Springer AG and Schweizer Ringier AG, to publish its international reportage magazine GEO in the three Eastern European countries of Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. At the same time, the Romanian edition of GEO will be discontinued due to the difficult economic situation in the country. With 20 national editions worldwide, the features magazine, founded as an offshoot of STERN in Germany in 1976, is Gruner + Jahr's most international magazine brand: local editions are currently also published in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Spain, Italy, Russia, Brazil, Greece, Turkey, Croatia, Bulgaria, Finland, India, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. The foreign GEO editions are editorially managed from Hamburg.

The reportage magazine GEO is launching a GEO iPad selection based on its English-language edition – a monthly selection of three reports from the current international print magazine in a multimedia format for the Apple iPad. GALA makes its debut in Kuwait with the June issue and therewith continues its internationalization. After launches in Syria and Lebanon last year, this is the third edition of the international celebrity and lifestyle magazine published under license in the rapidly growing Middle East region. This means that there are now editions of GALA in Germany, France, Poland, Russia (GALA Biografia), Croatia, Lithuania, Syria, Lebanon and Kuwait.

The Henri Nannen Prize 2010 for special services rendered to press freedom has been awarded to Iranian journalists, who are subject to violent reprisals in their country for attempting to report truthfully about Iran. Since they are not allowed to leave their country and many of them are behind bars, the Iranian journalist Maziar Bahari, who lives in London, will accept the award at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg on behalf of his colleagues. Bahari himself spent months in solitary confinement in Iranian prisons.

At a joint press conference today, marketing companies G+J Electronic Media Sales (EMS), IP Deutschland, SevenOne Media and TOMORROW FOCUS announced the founding of AdAudience GmbH. The EU Commission approved the four marketers' joint venture on January 22. All four hold equal parts of the new company, based in Düsseldorf. Frank Herold, hitherto Director Sales at IP Deutschland's Interactive operation, will become AdAudience's Managing Director. He will be building up a high-impact marketing team over the next few months.

The shareholders of the Italian joint venture G+J/Mondadori, Gruner + Jahr and Arnoldo Mondadori Editore S.p.A., have appointed Giacomo Moletto, 40, as Managing Director with effect from October 1, 2009. He succeeds Rolf Heinz, who is moving to Paris as the new CEO of Prisma Presse.

Gruner + Jahr is rearranging its international organization and is once again combining all its foreign operations, including G+J France, into the G+J International division led by G+J Executive Board member Dr. Torsten-Jörn Klein. As part of the reorganization, Fabrice Boé; will resign from the G+J Executive Board and from his duties as CEO of G+J France, with effect from October 1, 2009. He will continue to serve the G+J Executive Board as a consultant on international strategic issues. Boé; had been appointed to the Executive Board of Gruner + Jahr in January 2006, and in this capacity represented the French subsidiary on the top management body of Europe's biggest magazine publisher.

Gruner + Jahr was unable to escape the effects of an exceedingly difficult market environment in the first half of 2009 and, as forecast earlier, reported a clear year-on-year drop in revenues and Operating EBIT. The downturn-induced decline in brand-name advertising in the core markets has led to a considerable drop in ad sales revenues. Gruner + Jahr is countering the unrelenting ad sales crisis and the resultant accelerated structural change with a comprehensive cost-reduction and restructuring program in all markets.
