Gruner + Jahr plans to launch a new fortnightly woman’s magazine in Germany in fall 2002. WOMAN, with its compact and diverse assortment of topics, and its strong focus on practical value will be unique on the German market. Its precursor is WOMAN in Austria.
Editor-in-chief will be Karsten Flohr (51) who has already been editor-in-chief at TV TODAY and Vital and also acting editor-in-chief at BRIGITTE. The directors of G+J WOMAN Verlag GmbH, which will publish the new magazine, are Dr. Volker Breid (40) and Jörg Plathner (37).
WOMAN was launched with huge success in Austria in November 2001 and has a current circulation of 244,099 issues (ÖAK 1/02). G+J has the majority holding in News-Verlag which publishes WOMAN Austria.
Rolf Wickmann, G+J Magazines President said: With the launch of WOMAN in Germany, we are putting our plans in motion for targeted investment in our core markets. For G+J, this includes the market for sophisticated women‘s magazines. In Karsten Flohr, we have a very capable, experienced editor-in-chief who has energetically advanced the development and new launch of the magazine and has continued to develop WOMAN’s concept with its own features. The result is so convincing that, despite the currently difficult situation in the German magazines market, we decided in favor of the launch. A good product will always be successful.
