Employee celebration with strawberry cake and champagne / Anniversary campaign on Facebook and Twitter #grunerjahrzehnte / Hamburg's First Mayor hosts a senate reception
Hamburg, 30 June 2015 – G+J will celebrate its 50th birthday with employees over strawberry cake and champagne, and will present its history in a major social media campaign on Twitter (#grunerjahrzehnte), Facebook and the website www.grunerjahrzehnte.de.
Strawberries and champagne – that's how Richard Gruner, John Jahr and Gerd Bucerius celebrated signing the contracts that founded the publishing company half a century ago. They were signed in the garden of Jahr's villa in Hamburg on 30 June 1965. The next day G+J began its life as a printer and publishing company. In the decades that followed the company developed into one of the world's leading magazine publishers, with titles including STERN, GEO, BRIGITTE, ESSEN & TRINKEN and SCHÖNER WOHNEN, which have long been considered classics.
Today G+J is a modern, innovative twenty-first-century media company – offering classic brands in print and online together with numerous newer brands, such as FLOW and BEEF, and a rapidly growing digital arm. A number of new releases, including STERN CRIME and BARBARA, which will be published in autumn, show that G+J remains one of the most innovative magazine publishers in 2015. To mark the anniversary, G+J will launch a major social media campaign. The media company will post approximately 200 tweets with the hashtag #grunerjahrzehnte offering entertaining, informative and noteworthy facts about the company's history. CEO Julia Jäkel: "50 years of Gruner + Jahr means 50 years of outstanding writing, major stories, the best images and funny, crazy and sad moments. The tweets make up a mosaic, with the overall picture showing how Gruner + Jahr has always reflected society, helped shape it and has been shaped by it."
The 200 tweets will be divided into a variety of categories. They include #Seeingtheunseen, which will highlight unique stories from G+J magazines, and #Wirkungstreffer, articles that had a significant social impact. There will also be strange expense items (#AußerSpesenNixGewesen) and journalistic predictions that did not become reality, such as fears about the death of trees (#FailPrognosen). All the tweets will be collected at www.grunerjahrzehnte.de. The campaign will also run on Gruner + Jahr's Facebook page. The focus will be on Germany and the company's magazines.
Gruner + Jahr is to receive a special honour from Hamburg's First Mayor: Olaf Scholz will host a special senate reception in late August at the city's town hall to celebrate G+J's birthday. The guests will include 400 people from the worlds of the media, politics, business and society, including present and former shareholders as well as associates of the company.
