Tech Company AppLike raises 8 digit investment from German Media Company Gruner + Jahr / AppLike Group is formed

Hamburg, April 23, 2020 – Gruner + Jahr is expanding into the strategic growth market mobile and will invest 8 digit in the AppLike Group in the coming years. The group has grown out of the successful app marketing platform AppLike, which was founded in 2015 under the Gruner + Jahr umbrella and has become a Top 10 marketing channel for mobile apps in the AppsFlyer Performance Index for the past three years. Effective immediately, the group comprises three companies: adjoe, justDice, and Sunday. The AppLike Group will support its subsidiaries by providing state-of-the-art technologies, mobile apps expertise and their ad sales power in the app market.

Stepping in as Co-CEOs of the AppLike Group are Jonas Thiemann and Carlo Szelinsky, the founders and former managers of AppLike. They also become minority shareholders in the AppLike Group. Gruner + Jahr CEO Julia Jäkel will join the Management Board as well. Arne Wolter, G+J chief digital officer, who has been an early mentor for AppLike and helped the company grow to its current size, will accompany the new and expanded business as a member of the Board.

Based in Hamburg, Germany, the AppLike Group is active in 30 countries and currently employs 100 staff from 15 nations. It generates 90 percent of its revenue outside of Germany, with 60 percent of its total revenue coming from the United States.

adjoe is a technology-driven marketer that offers mobile apps the latest solutions for ad monetization and user acquisition. “Playtime,” adjoe’s first ad format, achieves triple-digit CPMs for app publishers. Using this unique ad formats and user profile targeting options provided by adjoe, advertisers can acquire their target users. adjoe also exclusively sells the reach of the other AppLike Group companies, justDice and Sunday.

Sunday focuses on marketing and developing mobile games. The start-up plans to succeed in this extremely competitive market by fostering fast development cycles and innovative ad monetization methods through creative advertising formats. More than just a new business unit, Sunday is a strategic cornerstone of the AppLike Group: adjoe customers can use Sunday’s additional reach to connect with an ever-increasing user base.

AppLike Group won Christoph Sachsenhausen as Sunday’s new managing director as of May 1, 2020. Sachsenhausen built up About You’s mobile app and online shop as Product Director.

The business of the former AppLike GmbH is carried on under the company justDice. justDice uses its own app discovery app to analyze usage behavior from Android users and recommend other apps and games they may like, rewarding loyal users with a virtual currency for long-term playtime. Apps such as Coin Pop, Appstation, and Fitplay which are operated by justDice have been downloaded more than 50 million times from the Google Play Store. The focus of this business expansion is chiefly new app products in loyalty & discovery, and expanding their own user acquisition and attribution technology.
