World Press Photo Germany Premiere at the G+J Pressehaus in Hamburg

Hamburg, 27 April 2004 –

Gruner + Jahr, STERN, GEO and theDEUTSCHE BAHN present the German premiere of the World PressPhoto exhibition at the G+J Pressehaus in Hamburg fromApr 29 to May 23. Starting Jun15, the partners will also showthe award-winning pictures in eight German railway stations -a first for the traveling exhibition.

Gruner + Jahr Chairman ; CEO Dr. Bernd Kundrun comments on theWorld Press Photo 2004: "This year, we celebrate an anniversaryof which we are particularly proud: This is the tenth time we arepresenting the world´s most prestigious competition for pressphotography. As Europe´s biggest magazine publisher, we alsostand for first-class photojournalism with our magazinesSTERN and GEO."

The World Press Photo of the year 2003 is a color photograph bythe French photographer Jean-Marc Bouju. An international panelof judges selected it from the 63,093 images submitted for thecontest. It shows an imprisoned Iraqi holding his four-year-oldson in his arms in a collective camp for prisoners of war nearNajaf (Iraq). Prizewinners also include the German photographerHorst Wackerbarth, who won an award for "The Red Couch",a work created for GEO magazine.

The exhibition of prizewinners not only provides concisedocumentation of last year´s world events, it also gives insightinto current focuses in press photography. Alongside shockingand moving images from our planet´s areas of conflict, theexhibition also shows the other side of journalistic photography:fascinating close-ups, glimpses of strange worlds, andphotographic highlights from culture, the arts, sports,environment and science.
